Toll Tax: New technologies including GPS-based toll collection system will be implemented by the Central Government by March next year to remove the existing toll plazas on the highways. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari gave this information on Wednesday.

The initiative aims to reduce traffic jams and collect toll from drivers based on the actual distance traveled on the highway. “The government is considering new technologies, including GPS-based toll systems, to replace toll plazas in the country… We will launch new GPS satellite-based toll collection across the country by March next year,” he said.

Gadkari also informed that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has also run two pilot projects of Automatic Number Plate Recognition System (Automatic Number Plate Reader Camera) to enable automatic toll collection without stopping the vehicles.

During 2018–19, the average waiting time of vehicles at the toll plaza was 8 minutes. With the introduction of FASTag during 2020-21 and 2021-22, the average waiting time of vehicles reduced to 47 seconds. However, waiting times have improved significantly in some places, especially near cities and in densely populated towns. Still, there is some delay at the toll plaza during rush hour.
