Smartphone: A report in Scientific American details the work of Lars Berglund, a researcher at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, and researchers at the University of Maryland (UM) on the transparent wood. After years of experiments, transparent wood is being seen as a promising material in various applications in the future. Here you might be wondering how the wood will be made transparent, then let us tell you that in this process a substance called lignin will be removed from the wood. This glue-like substance holds together tube-like cells that transport water and nutrients throughout the tree and helps give the tree its brown color. Researchers bleached the lignin to remove color then filled it with epoxy resin to make it transparent.

According to Berglund and Liangbing Hu, lead scientist at UM, millimeter-thick sheets of transparent wood allow 80% to 90% of light to pass through, although this light transmission decreases as the sheet gets a centimeter thick. Tests assessing how easily wood breaks under pressure found that transparent wood is three times stronger than plexiglass and 10 times stronger than glass. Being slim, wood is being seen as an alternative to plastic and glass. It is expected that in the coming time, wood will be used instead of plastic or glass in smartphones, computers and other screens.
