Driverless cars: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has reportedly said that driverless cars will not come to India to protect the jobs of drivers. According to a report Gadkari said, “I will never allow driverless cars to come to India because many drivers will lose their jobs and I will not let that happen.”

What did Gadkari say?

Addressing road safety concerns in the country during the Zero Mile Dialogue held at IIM Nagpur, Gadkari laid out the framework for government measures to reduce accidents, including the inclusion of six airbags in cars, and eliminating black spots on roads. This includes reducing and increasing fines through the Electric Motors Act.

Recently, during the ongoing Parliament winter session, Gadkari said in Parliament that the capital cost on national highways has increased from about ₹51,000 crore in 2013-14 to more than ₹2,40,000 crore in FY 2022-23. He said that the budgetary allocation of the Road Ministry has increased from approximately ₹31,130 crore in 2013-14 to ₹2,70,435 crore in 2023

Work is being done on increasing public infrastructure

On the question of Tesla Inc. coming to India, Gadkari said the government is ready to welcome the American automaker to India, but manufacturing in China for sale in India will not be accepted. Apart from this, he shared his views on hydrogen fuel, in which he said that the government is committed to adopting advanced technologies to improve public infrastructure.
