Black Box: New cars in the EU will be equipped with an event data recorder (EDR). It is also known as black box. Based on information shared on the European Commission website, this device will be installed as a standard feature in all newly registered vehicles from July 2024. These instruments are commonly used in the aviation industry to obtain details of an aircraft after an accident. Interestingly, despite being called a black box, the color of this device is bright orange.

This decision will include all vehicles falling under the M1 class. That means this device will be installed in all those vehicles which have seating capacity for eight passengers including the driver’s seat. Additionally, there will also be N1 category vehicles, which includes pickup trucks and vans weighing less than 3500 kg. It is worth noting that the black box will be redesigned so that its size can easily fit in vehicles.

The black box will help provide authorities with the data needed to analyze the accident. This will make it easier for them to check who is at fault. It will record data for a very short period of five seconds before the crash and 0.3 seconds after the collision. The device will also contain information regarding the make and model of the vehicle as well as equipment.

The EDR is usually integrated into the airbag control unit and cannot be deactivated. It activates automatically when the airbag and seat belt tensioner are deployed. Additionally, it starts recording when the vehicle’s active hood is extended, or if there is a speed change of more than 8 km/h (5 mph) in the lateral or longitudinal direction within 0.15 seconds.

This order is available in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic/Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Romania. It will be implemented in 27 EU countries, including Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.
